International Champions Cup: PSG Down Simeone’s Men in Singapore

The International Champions Cup is in full swing after a drama-packed 10 days so far, despite it only being pre-season. Paris Saint-Germain picked up their first win of the tournament early this morning, dramatically edging past Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid team 3-2.

Ángel Di Maria was welcomed back to the starting line-up on Monday, the Argentinean forward making his first appearance after the World Cup.

The midfield was strong, with Adrien Rabiot captaining the side again, with Marco Verratti and Giovani Lo Celso beside the impressive Frenchman.

For Diego Simeone’s team, he went with a front three of Luciano Vietto, Ángel Correa and former PSG striker Kevin Gameiro.

The game was sparked to life in the 31st minute through Christopher Nkunku. But, with both sides making many changes during the game, there was little room for consistent free-flowing football. We didn’t get another goal until the 70th minute when Moussa Diaby doubled the Parisians’ lead.

Victor Mollejo pulled one back for Atletico before an own-goal from Antoine Bernede brought the Spaniards level. But in the first minute of stoppage time, 18-year-old Virgiliu Postolachi got the winner for PSG with a superb curling effort past Adan in goal.

PSG had previously lost to both Bayern and Arsenal, conceding eight times in two games, but they showed great resolve and spirit to bounce back to finish the tournament on a high.

PSG’s three points move then off of the foot of the ICC accumulated table, while Atletico still have Inter Milan to come before their duties are over.
