Arsenal won this year’s edition of the International Champions Cup London Derby with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over rivals, Chelsea.
Both teams started fairly strong lineups for the occasion. Antonio Rudiger returned for Chelsea while Arsenal, pretty much, kept their team from the 5-1 win against PSG on Saturday.
Chelsea opened the scoring via Rudiger’s head from Fabregas’s corner in the 4th minute. The German defender evaded his marker, Emile Smith-Rowe, and directed his header just inside Petr Cech’s left post.
The Blues could have doubled their lead ten minutes later when they were awarded a penalty for Bellerin’s foul on Hudson-Odoi, but Morata saw his kick from the spot saved by Cech.
Hudson-Odoi continued to terrorize Bellerin and Arsenal altogether on the left flank, but his team-mates failed to capitalize on his attacking passes.
Arsenal slowly grew into the game and started to create chances of their own, with their best opportunity coming through Aubameyang just before half-time. But the Arsenal striker mistimed his shot and completely missed the ball.
Both teams made changes in the second half, which brought a new dimension in the game. Chances were deflated a bit as the fresh faces tried to settle in.
With time ticking away, Arsenal pressed Chelsea late on with Bulka making some important saves. But his net was finally breached in the third minute of stoppage time when Lacazette tapped in Nelson’s cross.
In the penalty shootout that followed, Ruben Loftus-Cheek was the only blot on the sheet as the Gunners won 6-5.
